New Reno Flag
Creating a new icon.
The city of Reno had an unofficial flag, but it was a laughing stock of the city, and of the wider flag enthusiast community. In an effort to continue rebranding, the city wanted a new city flag that could become a unique symbol for residents to feel proud of. The design of a flag has to be so iconic that it can be instantly recognized, even when its blowing in the wind or hanging still. With the Reno flag, I set out to create something with iconic simplicity, but also filled with the rich story of the city as well.
The flag was unveiled at the city's 150th birthday celebration, during the Reno Aces ball game. The initial unveiling was covered by all the city's major publications and news stations, sparking hundreds of thousands of comments and shares.
"I think we hit a home run. Basically, we kept it simple. We used a minimum number of colors. We kept the lettering and the seal off the design. It's certainly unique to Reno, and I think it has the potential to be a really cool city flag, which is the unwritten rule."
